THE RNG BOX

The worlds first naked slot machine.

Players are always asking 'Are slots really random?' so we helped them answer their own question with the RNG box. To help slot players really understand how a slot machine works PlaySmart built a stripped down version of a slot machine. Devoid of splashy graphics, bells and whistles and fancy animations. This slot - dubbed the RNG box (Random Number Generator) showed players exactly what happens from the push of the spin button to the outcome, helping to dispel popular myths about slots and replacing them with facts.

Short video clip of the RNG box live at an event. The first set of numbers on the left are the random numbers the machine is generating, which never stops once it's plugged in.

Fabricated out of: steel, wood, plastic, LED screens and an Arduino unit.

BREAKING IT DOWN

1- All slot machines work off of what's called a random number generator that determines the outcome.

2- Each number is associated with symbols.

3- When you hit the spin button you're stopping the RNG at a specific moment. In that instant random numbers are generated and you your win or loss is decided in a matter of a split second.

4 - The player doesn’t realize this. From the time the button is pressed to seeing the result is filled with cool slot animations. And at times the appearance of the machine thinking. It’s the entertainment factor.

5 - The RNG Box plays like a slot machine while showing players the speed at which numbers are generated and how quick their selection is happening.

Design development

From a deep learning of how slots machines work, to concept sketches, 3D rendering and fabrication every step was considered in how a user would interact with our tool. The RNG box goes on tour with the PlaySmart team to various casinos and public events to help dispel myths about slot machines and replace them with what players really need - knowledge they can bet on.
